SEMINARS OFFER AWARENESS,
SCREENINGS AND EDUCATION
By Andrea Nagel
As a community-owned hospital,
Kootenai works
hard to offer free or affordable classes, screenings and
support groups to the community.
Recently, Kootenai teamed up with another com-
munity organization to expand these offerings and
make them more accessible. The Kroc Center in Coeur
d’Alene is a hub for health, fitness and hobby enthusi-
asts throughout northern Idaho.
“Offering classes at the Kroc helps Kootenai reach
community members that may not be aware of particu-
lar services or benefits that are available through the
hospital and its affiliated clinics and providers,” said
pulmonologist Todd Hoopman, M.D., Breathe Easy in-
structor. “It’s our goal and objective to improve the
health and well-being of community members, and this
serves as an informal forum for education with regard
to health-related topics.”
Together Kootenai Health and the Kroc will host a se-
ries of seminars ranging from heart screenings to stress
management. Because Kootenai Health and the Kroc
Center serve a similar population, many Kroc members
will benefit from the easier access to health-related
classes.
“We aim to provide high-quality educational programs
that enhance individuals’ physical, mental, emotional
and spiritual well-being,” said April Near, social services
manager at the Kroc Center. “The classes Kootenai
Health is offering will help participants understand a
broader scope of resources in the medical community.”
Dr. Hoopman believes Kootenai and its providers have
a duty to promote health through as many different
forums and avenues as possible. He said oftentimes
community members don’t know where to start when it
comes to a health question or concern. These forums
provide a safe and educational place to ask questions,
get answers and begin to build a relationship with the

main health care provider in the area.
“Kootenai will be able to showcase its role in our
community members’ lives, their health and their
long-term successful living,” Dr. Hoopman said. “The
Kroc is an excellent outreach forum because of the
wide diversity of patrons that use the facility. The Kroc
benefits because its goal is a healthy mind, body and
spirit. A partnership between these two entities further
addresses that goal and provides a concrete forum for
discussion and action.”
