“There is nothing more exciting than eating your own fresh
veggies. I suggest starting your seeds in April or May—if you
don’t have the space, wait to buy your plants until the end
of May. Seeds and small starts like indirect light and warmth
to help develop their roots. Finally, don’t put anything in the
ground before May 30. We can still get frost into the early part
of June.”

“Garden because you love it, not just for the product. I think
that gardening is a great hobby—it’s good for your spirit and a
good physical activity. The end product is a great reward for all
your hard work, but make sure to start gardening because it’s
something you like to do.”

“Blueberries are my favorite thing to grow, although they can
often take years to get established and start producing good
fruit. Blueberries require very acidic soil in order to do well.”

“In general, for effective gardening all plants need light,
warmth, air, water, nutrients, and support to keep them from
falling over. The soil plays a major role in several of these
areas, so having a healthy garden is dependent on good soil. It
can be helpful to have your soil pH tested, which is a relatively
inexpensive test. Most vegetables thrive in a soil with pH
between 6.0 and 7.0.”

“If you want to grow your own tomatoes but have a problem
with the length of our growing season or are short on space, try
growing them in a large pot. Place it in a very sunny location
on your porch or next to the house. The soil in the pot heats up
faster and the house protects the plants from light frost.”
