Health “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” —Albert Schweitzer Over my nearly 35-year career in health care, I’ve had the opportunity to lead and work with people with incredible talent. Physicians, by nature and training, are incredibly intelligent, and nurses are some of the most innovative problem-solvers you’ll ever meet. The only thing they—and the rest of us—need is the right environment to shine. As the CEO of Kootenai Health, it’s my job to foster that environment. Here are a few practices that help. Remind people of what they do right. You cannot unleash the creative power in people who doubt themselves. Instilling confidence in others is the gift that keeps on giving. Recognize great work and you’ll see more great work. Everyone wants to feel good about their contributions, and taking a moment to recognize exceptional work encourages everyone. Put people in roles that capitalize on their strengths. Give people the opportunity to do what they love to do, and you will be amazed at the results. Partner with people whose strengths are different from your own. Collaboration will take both of you farther than either of you can travel on your own. Our new Hospitality Center (page 5) is a perfect example of this! When local leaders create work places in which their team members can do their best work, our community benefits. Services improve, new programs are offered, and jobs become more enjoyable. Whether you are leading a large organization, a small business or your family, give people every opportunity to love what they do. Wishing you good health, Jon Ness, CEO
