By Andrea Nagel Kootenai Health recently opened a new on-site simulation center for hands-on training and skill building. The new center offers a variety of classes, training and other educational opportunities for clinical staff looking to build skills and confidence. “Our goal is to bring all training activities into the new center,” said Kelly McCarthy, Kootenai Health Simulation Center supervisor. “In coming years, we will be increasing and standardizing our offerings and opening up more opportunities to our staff and community.” The simulation center consists of three mock patient rooms, each with its own observation and control rooms. The room options include a standard hospital patient room, an operating room that can be converted to simulate a trauma room or other procedure room, and a clinical exam room that can be converted to simulate a neonatal intensive care room or a behavioral health room. “The rooms were designed to maximize our space while still providing an authentic experience for our staff,” Kelly said. “Having the observation and control areas provides separation for the staff undergoing the simulation and gives them a more realistic experience.” Teamwork In addition to creating a realistic environment, the simulation center is equipped with three high-fidelity mannequins that can talk; respond to treatment and techniques being practiced; and provide a heartbeat, lung functions and blood pressure. These mannequins are controlled by a trained staff member in the control room. “In addition to technology, the center provides opportunity for collaboration, debrief following New simulation center offers hands-on training BUILDING SKILLS and training and team building,” said John Sporleder, Kootenai Health Organizational Development director. “It allows us to continually be learning and improving our processes.” Currently, the simulation center 18
