Health Lisa Kolenda, Cancer Services registered nurse Snow Crocus Remarkable Achievements “It is not enough that we do our best; sometimes we must do what is required.” —Winston Churchill While Kootenai Health’s work to care for COVID-19 patients over the past two years provided headlines for both local and national news agencies, many people missed some of the other important work that was also underway. Even while working through pandemic-sized challenges, the team at Kootenai Health never lost sight of our vision to work as ONE connected team, boldly transforming the health care experience to become a premier medical destination. Remarkably, in 2021, Kootenai Health also earned a number of awards and designations in spite of the many other challenges our staff members faced. Here are a few that are notable: • Healthgrades Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award: Kootenai ranked among the Top 10 percent in the nation for cardiac surgery excellence. • Magnet Designation: This is the fourth time Kootenai has received Magnet recognition for nursing excellence—an achievement earned by only 7 percent of hospitals nationwide. • Standard & Poor’s “A” Rating: 2021 was the seventh year in a row Kootenai received an “A” rating for outstanding financial stewardship. • American Medical Association’s Joy in Medicine Award: Recognizes companies for their work to support physician well-being and reduce burnout. • Commission on Cancer Accreditation: Kootenai Clinic Cancer Services has maintained this designation consistently since 1990. That doesn’t mean it’s easy—it means our team is committed to providing our patients the best care possible. • 82nd Percentile for Employee Engagement: Each year, all Kootenai employees are invited to participate in the Gallup Employee Engagement Survey. In spite of the extremely heavy impact COVID-19 had on Kootenai, our employees remained as committed as ever to their work. • Mayo Clinic Care Network Member: 2021 marked the seventh year of Kootenai’s participation in the Mayo Clinic Care Network and our access to their exceptional resources for patients close to home. While Kootenai Health would be proud to achieve these awards and designations under any circumstances, I am especially proud of the teams and individuals who did so in spite of the many other challenges faced in 2021. We can all look forward to more exciting achievements in 2022! Wishing you good health, Jon Ness, CEO 4
