Kootenai | Kootenai Health | Issue 4, 2017
Tell us a little bit about you and your family: My wife, Michele, is a cardiologist. We’ve been married for four years. I was born in eastern Ohio. I’m a military kid, and I spent five years in Athens, Greece, and moved around the eastern half of the U.S. I’ve lived off and on outside of Columbia, South Carolina, since 1992. Why did you pick your specialty? I was a molecular/microbiology major at Clemson University and went into residency thinking I would go into oncology, then rheumatology and then infectious disease (ID). My fellow residents thought ID fit me given my background, and I liked to figure out compli- cated patient cases. What can patients expect when they show up for their first appointment with you? I treat folks like I would expect to be treated. What are some of your hobbies? My biggest hobby is white-water kayaking. Another physician here and I have arranged for free kayak- ing lessons to start this coming fall and winter in the Kootenai Health pool. What drew you to Kootenai Health? I wanted to live in an area that has an active outdoor scene, particularly in white water. What is your favorite healthy tip? Eat well and take care of yourself so you may take care of others. I’ve been happily married for 14 years to my wife, Staci. We have five boys. Why did you pick your specialty? My passion for family health care comes from ob- servations of the service my grandfather (also named Drostan Baker) provided to countless people as a family physician. I am excited to return to my home state of Idaho to practice medicine. What can patients expect when they show up for their first appointment with you? Patients can expect a listening ear and compassionate care. What are some of your hobbies? My hobbies include sports and outdoor recreation with my family. We love to ski in the winter and wakeboard and surf during the summer. I enjoy doing yard work and home maintenance. I am a Varsity Boy Scout leader and leader of our church’s youth group. What drew you to Kootenai Health? I was drawn to Kootenai Health for its community- based, not-for-profit approach. What is your favorite healthy tip? My favorite healthy tip is to do your grocery shop- ping along the outside perimeter of the grocery store. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Baker, call (208) 625-5155 .
