Thomas Ryan, NP Kootenai Clinic Lung and Asthma Tell us a bit about you and your family: I am originally from New Jersey. After six years of service in the Marine Corps Infantry, I became an RN through the BSN program of Washington State University’s College of Nursing. Upon graduation, I relocated to Nashville to complete a critical care RN residency with the trauma team of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. I also completed the acute care nurse practitioner program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Why did you pick your specialty? I enjoy the fast-paced and complex environment of critical care, and this was my specialty as a bedside RN. What can patients expect when they first meet you? When patients first meet me, it is typically a less than ideal situation because of the critical care setting. I try to deliver enough accurate and evidence-based information to allow them and their families to consider all options and ultimately develop a treatment plan that delivers optimal outcomes while respecting the patient’s autonomy. What drew you to Kootenai Health? I was drawn to Kootenai Health because of the organization’s core values, emphasis on allowing NPs to work to the full scope of their capabilities and licensure, and the superior care delivered to this area by Kootenai that undoubtedly exceeds national expectations and standards. What are some of your hobbies? Golfing, hiking, camping and reading. What is your favorite healthy tip? My healthy tip is to manage minor conditions proactively and with tenacity. Doing so helps prevent a negative outcome or exacerbation of a condition that can be easily managed. Such vigilance can help prevent a critical care experience.
