Fall prevention Fall prevention presentations and Balance and Fitness classes help seniors and those at a higher risk of falling build strength and balance, and they provide education for fall-proofing seniors’ residences. • 26 classes offered • 2 community presentations • 90+ seniors educated Helmet safety Helmet safety education and fit checks, with free helmet distribution to children in need. In the winter months, Injury Prevention works with Lookout Resort on ski and snowboard helmet safety and concussion awareness. • 10 area school and community events • 20 classes • 1,225 children educated • 494 helmets distributed Safety Done Right Injury Prevention programs in our community *Numbers represent January through August 2019 Think First Education for freshman and sophomore high school students about head and spinal cord injury prevention. • 4 classes • 87 freshman and sophomore students educated Water and life jacket safety Together with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s department and other community partners, Kootenai helps stock life jacket loaner stations and provides education to children and parents about being safe in and near the water. • 160 children, youth and adults educated in class and community settings • 2 community events • 48 new and 10 used life jackets distributed to individuals and Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department for local loaner stations Stop the Bleed Educates the public about how to respond and stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency or mass casualty situation. • 446 trained in a two-hour class • 650 spot-trained at booth events • 32 classes provided in the community and at Kootenai Health Workshops for private groups: • Idaho Transportation Department • Panhandle Health District, Medical Reserves Corps • North Idaho College, annual Safety Fest • Idaho State Nutrition Association • Kootenai County government offices • Coeur d’Alene, Lakeland, Kellogg, Post Falls and Plummer/Worley school districts “The Coeur d’Alene Police Department and Kootenai County EMS System have collaborated with us on injury prevention projects including Heat Stroke awareness, helmet safety, Stop the Bleed and numerous other projects,” Wendy said. “They say it ‘takes a village,’ and Injury Prevention is no exception. These programs would not be nearly as impactful without the support and collaboration of our community partners.” KH . ORG 17
