Heather McKenzie, DNP, FNP-C Kootenai Clinic,Orthopedics Tell us a little bit about you and your family. I am originally from Montana and went to Montana State University. I earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and later a bachelor’s degree in nursing. After that, I pursued my doctor of nursing practice and became a family nurse practitioner. My husband works for Gonzaga University, and we have two golden retrievers. Why did you pick your specialty? I like the ability to help people get back to the activities they love. What can patients expect when they first meet with you? I shoot it straight and don’t beat around the bush. What are some of your hobbies? Skiing, backpacking and camping, hiking, running, boating, and traveling. What drew you to Kootenai Health? The location is perfect for our lifestyle. What is your favorite healthy tip? It is more important what you do during the 23 hours you aren’t working out than during the hour you spend working out. To schedule an appointment, call (208) 625-6111 . Tell us a little bit about you and your family. I grew up here in northern Idaho, then spent time in the U.S. Army and moved back after I obtained my RN degree. I’ve been an RN for 17 years; 15 at Kootenai. I have two boys and a daughter, and my husband works for the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department. We also have two dogs, Bailey the golden retriever, and Holly the German shepherd. Why did you pick your specialty? I started my career in the emergency department but changed over to cardiology a few years ago. I find cardiology fascinating. I will be working mostly in the Heart Failure Clinic at Kootenai Heart Clinics. I’ve been working as a nurse navigator there for the past four years. I love our heart failure patients and have learned that I really enjoy chronic disease management, which is why I decided to take on a provider role here. What can patients expect when they first meet with you? I like to learn about the patient’s story while I’m getting their history. I think it’s very important to build a relationship, which helps build trust. I like to think I have a pretty good sense of humor too. What are some of your hobbies? I love to be outdoors camping, hiking, and fly fishing with my family and friends. I also love a good, cheesy Hallmark movie on occasion. What drew you to Kootenai Health? I grew up here and when I moved back, I wanted a career at our community hospital. I’ve been here ever since and seen so much change and growth! What is your favorite healthy tip? Avoid adding salt to your food! And of course, choose a heart- healthy diet. Lisa Fredrick, MSN, FNP-C, CHFN Kootenai Heart Clinics To schedule an appointment, call (208) 625-5250 . KH . ORG 11
