Staeheli, M.D., FAAOS Kootenai Clinic Orthopedics Tell us a little bit about you and your family: I am an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic trauma. I am fellowship-trained and board-certified. My practice centers on the care of extremity fractures, nonunions, malunions and pelvic/acetabular fractures. I grew up in Spokane and eastern Washington but spent summers at Priest Lake. My father was an orthopedic surgeon, and I grew up seeing the joy and satisfaction that this specialty gives. As a former active duty Navy orthopedic surgeon, I helped treat and reconstruct war injuries. I am married and have four children I constantly chase around the house! Why did your pick your specialty? Orthopedics has such a long history of improving lives. Orthopedic injuries can be devastating and life-changing, but I enjoy seeing my patients recover after very serious injuries and get back to an active lifestyle. There is nothing like seeing your patients get back to their previous level of function. Orthopedic care is a great partnership between patients and their surgeon to get great results. What can patients expect when they first meet with you? I treat everyone like they’re my family. I discuss both operative and non-operative care and, through shared decision-making with each patient, we set out goals and expectations. What are some of your hobbies? Everything outdoors! I try to ski and ski tour as much as I can. Backpacking and spending time in the mountains is as good as it gets in northern Idaho. What drew you to Kootenai Health? Growing up in Spokane and eastern Washington was such a great experience, and I know how great Coeur d’Alene is. Kootenai Health was a huge draw with their dedication to orthopedic excellence and great partners in the orthopedic department. What is your favorite healthy tip? Stay active in the outdoors— whether it’s on an ATV, skis or hiking boots! Schedule an appointment: Call (208) 625-6111 .
