KH . ORG 11 Denise White, DNP, PMHNP-BC Kootenai Clinic Psychiatry Tell us a little bit about you and your family: I was raised in Quincy, Massachusetts. After earning a BFA in college, I moved to California and worked for a company that relocated to Coeur d’Alene. After that company was sold, I chose to stay in the area and raise my daughter and fraternal twins. When the last of my children went off to college, I decided to return to college and receive my nursing degree. I then continued on to receive my degree as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and then pursued my doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree while working as a psychiatric nurse. Why did you pick your specialty? I have always been interested in mental health. I chose the nursing path to enter the field of behavioral health. It is an area of health care that is so important but under- addressed and overlooked, despite how many people (1 in 5) are affected by mental illness in their lifetime. Compared to other specialties in health care, there is a shortage of providers for mental health care. Schedule an appointment by calling (208) 625-4888 . What is your favorite healthy tip? “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” —Benjamin Franklin It is much easier (and cheaper) to prevent something from happening, to take appropriate precautions, than to suffer the consequences later. Establish a daily routine that can help reap the benefits of a sharper mind and healthier body. Mental health is just as important as physical health, whether it is listening to a podcast, reading the Bible, meditating or just going for a walk. What can patients expect when they first meet with you? During our first meeting, I engage with my patients to build a trusting, positive rapport. I make an effort to listen to the patient and understand their needs, expectations and goals for treatment. What are some of your hobbies? Spending time with family and friends, traveling, cooking, and outdoor activities. My plan is to learn to golf this year. What drew you to Kootenai Health? I have worked at Kootenai Health as a nurse since I graduated. I was drawn to Kootenai Health, as it is an important part of our community and neighboring communities. The area has limited services for the needs of mental health patients, and Kootenai meets those needs and continues to build their service line. The hospital is also supportive of their employees in ongoing academic achievements and growth. What is your favorite healthy tip? I find engaging in exercise, that is enjoyable, is important to improve both physical and mental health.
