Health “Health care is, by any measure, the largest economic driver in Kootenai County.” —Sam Wolkenhaeur, Regional Labor Economist Kootenai County has long enjoyed exceptional health care for the size of our community. Over the past several years, Kootenai Health has been pleased to be able to stabilize, strengthen and introduce new services in northern Idaho. The benefit to health care services is immediately obvious, but there is also a tremendous benefit to our local economy. Recently we had the opportunity to work with the Coeur d’Alene Economic Development Council, formerly Jobs Plus, to help quantify that impact. Knowing our Kootenai Health magazine readers are engaged, informed members of our community, we wanted to share the following facts. • Of the top 10 “hot jobs” in Idaho (ranked by the Idaho Department of Labor) five of them are in health care. • Within Kootenai County: ˚ There are 661 total health care employers. ˚ 10,872 people are employed in health care. Within Kootenai County, health care accounts for: ˚ Health care jobs accounted for $486,071,268 in wages in 2018. ˚ The average health care wage in Kootenai County is $44,879. Kootenai County is a special place where you can see your physician in his clinic one day and bump into him at the grocery store the next. By any metric—clinical, financial or social— quality health care close to home is good for northern Idaho. Wishing you good health, Jon Ness, CEO
