LAST YEAR ALMOST 1,400 BABIES WERE
born at Kootenai Health. This year we have the
opportunity towelcome evenmore of these special
little people into theworld, including a fewwemight
not have been able to welcome just a year ago.
Kootenai Health began developing a neonatal
intensive care program last year, with the help of
neonatologists Priscilla Hancock, M.D., and Kath-
leenWebb, M.D. Under their leadership Kootenai
has expanded its care of newborns to be able to
meet the needs of babies that are as many as eight
weeks premature.
With the programs currently in place, each year approximately 40 families
who would have had to travel outside our area for care can now receive the
care they need right here at home. If you are wondering just how important
that can be for a young couple, take a moment to read about the McVey
family on page 6.
As exciting as the early developments in this program are, more are
coming. Proceeds from this year’s Kootenai Health Foundation’s Festival
of Trees events will benefit neonatal intensive care services at Kootenai.
Your generosity at the festival will benefit thousands of babies and young
families in the years to come.
Benefiting all babies isn’t just optimism—it’s fact. An active neonatol-
ogy program at Kootenai Health will benefit more than just premature
babies. Every program development made, every new piece of equipment
purchased and every new bit of knowledge gained will ultimately benefit
all babies born at Kootenai.
Neonatal intensive care is one more way we are delivering quality health
care close to home. And ensuring another generation of Idaho children can
say they were born in the “big blue hospital.”
Wishing you good health,
Jon Ness, CEO
