Opening Thoughts
Jon Ness, CEO
Wishing you good health,
Jon Ness, CEO
When spring arrives in northern Idaho,
it’s always spectacular. New growth is all around,
and everything seems to take on a new vitality.
It’s a good reminder that a lot of preparation
and growth is taking place behind the scenes
before it becomes visible. At Kootenai Health
we’re starting to enjoy the unveiling of a number
of projects that are the result of years of work
behind the scenes.
In March we announced plans to break ground
on a $57 million, three-story expansion. As
Kootenai has grown its services to care for the
patients and families of northern Idaho, patient volumes have also grown.
Additional space is needed to accommodate this growing number of pa-
tients and also make room for improvements to the existing facility.
In April, Kootenai Health received verification as a level III trauma cen-
ter. Kootenai is the only northern Idaho hospital to hold this verification. It
is affirmation that injured patients will quickly receive the expert care they
need for the best possible recovery. It is fitting thanks and recognition for
our dedicated physicians, surgeons and staff members who work to con-
tinuously improve care in our community.
This July we will welcome six newly graduated physicians to Kootenai’s
Family Medicine Coeur d’Alene Residency program. This is just the third
program of its kind in Idaho, and the only program in northern Idaho. It
is the result of years of work by numerous physicians and staff members.
When the program reaches its full enrollment in three years, we will have
a total of 18 residents on-site learning and providing care in our commu-
nity. We expect many of these young physicians to stay in our region and
continue to practice here after completing the program.
It is a pleasure to see our physician and staff members’ years of work
recognized in these very visible achievements. We’ve had a beautiful spring
at Kootenai Health, and we’re looking forward to a very exciting summer.
